It is said that the custom originated from Ching Dynasty (1885). During July and August in Yanshui, Tainan, there was a big plague and it caused thousands of death because the medical technology was undeveloped at that time. The residents pray to Kuan Kung to stop the disaster. Finally, the Wu temple of Kuan Kung issued a decree to have a procession to vanquish evils. He also appointed his vice general, Zhou Cang yeh, to lead in front and had Emperor Guan’ s palanquin escort the troop. Then, the believer followed the troop to walk along the district and played the firework until the next day. After the procession, the plague was removed. In order to thank the god, the residents act in the same way on Lantern Festival every year. Therefore, it becomes one of the most famous festivals in Taiwan today.
