Once upon a time, a young cowherd named Niulang came across seven fairy sisters bathing in a lake. With the help of his old ox, he fell in love with the seventh sister Zhinu. Later Zhinu agreed to marry Niulang. They lived happily and had two children.
However when the Goddess of Heaven found out that Zhinu had married a mortal, the Goddess was furious and ordered Zhinu to return to Heaven. Niulang was very upset that his wife had disappeared. Suddenly, his ox began to talk, telling him that if he killed it and put on its hide, he would be able to go up to Heaven to find his wife. He killed the ox, put on the skin, and carried his two beloved children off to Heaven to find Zhinu. The Goddess discovered this and was very angry. Taking out her hairpin, the Goddess scratched a wide river in thesky to separate the two lovers forever.
Their love touched all the magpies in the world, which flew up into Heaven to form a bridge so the lovers may be together for a single night, which is the seventh night of the seventh moon, called Chinese Valentine.

In early time, Taiwanese would worship the god of babies called “Chuangmu” on lunar July 7 th with the hope that their baby could grow up safely. It is said that Taiwanese under 16 years old are protected by “Chuangmu”. Therefore, young boys and girls worship “Chuangmu” in his or her bedroom by preparing the offerings like glutinous oil rice filled with the chicken wine to express gratitude to the god for blessing them. Besides, “Chuanmu clothes” , which are some paper money carved with the totem of clothes, are also burned.
Moreover, in folk belief, lunar July 7th is also the birthday of the Seven Star Goddess. And she is also called “Seven Star Nyannyan or Tensen Nyannyan”. And reportedly, she is a spouse of the Dipper . Therefore, some people think that Seven Star Goddess is the seventh fairy or called “Seven Xiangu”. And she has the same power as “Chuanmu” for blessing health of babies, but their legends are very different.
Taiwan folk custom generally worship Seven Star Goddess on Chinese Valentine’s Day. Specially, they prepare soft rice cake, Yuan Zai flower, cockscomb, jasmine, Aglaia, rouge, Gouache, glutious oil rice filled with chicken wine, gift offerings and a round mirror. The most important offering is a Seven Star Goddess pavilion which is made of paper. If there is a 16-year-old teenager in the family, parents have to prepare rice dumplings and noodles. After worshiping, they should burn paper money for the gods and “jin yi”. And then, Seven Star Goddess pavilion is also burnt. Because the skeleton is difficult to burn, they usually throw it to the roof. So the method of worshiping symbolizes that the children have become adults.
After the worshiping at home, people pray to Seven Star Goddess and Mastu to bless children to grow up safely in the temple. Parents mostly hang a “Juan”, which is red string linking ancient coins, silver medal and lock medal together, on the children’s neck in order to help themgrow up smoothly. Therefore, it is called“Gua juan”. Parents take their children to worship Seven Star Goddess in the temple on every Chinese Valentine’s Day. If they need to change the red string, they have to do it until their children are sixteen years old, and this custom is called
“Huan juan”. After children grow up to sixteen years old, parents need to offer votive in the temple on Seven Star Goddess’ birthday, which is called “Tuo juan”. Through this action, parents can be thankful to Goddess for blessing.
