立夏 Lixia: literally means “start of summer”
Lixia signifies the beginning of summer. It usually begins on around May 5 and ends on around May 21.
The day of Lixia is very important for farmers, because farmers can forecast the condition of the summer crops. In this term, mulberry and cherry are in season.
立夏即表示春天到了尾聲,正式預告夏天的來臨。它通常在國曆5月5日至5月21日。
這一天對農家而言非常重要,因為這個時候開始進入夏收作物的生長後期,大抵可以看出夏收作物的歲收狀況。這個時節是桑椹、櫻桃的盛產期。
Qī Jiā Zhōu(Congee Cooked with Cereal from Seven Neighbors) 七家粥
People of seven families cook congee with cereal and beans of five colors to share with one another on the day of Lixia. It is said that this can keep one’s finger crossed. However, this custom is disappearing.
七家粥就是左鄰右舍7戶人家互贈穀類,再以自家5種不同顏色豆類熬煮成的稀飯,據說立夏吃「七家粥」,整個夏季都可以保平安。但此習俗隨著時代變遷而式微。

Dietetic Supplementation for Father in Lixia
「立夏,補老父」 On the day of Lixia, daughters should go back to her maiden home and prepare vermicelli with pork leg for her father, which means filial piety. But this custom differs in different regions. For example, people prepare thick egg noodles in Nantou area; coastal areas have the dietetic supplementation in Dongzhi. 立夏這一天出嫁的女兒要準備豬腳麵線帶回去給娘家這邊的父親吃,以食補增強父母的抵抗力,以免長輩生病,充滿了孝親的意涵。但是這個習俗,因地區不同也就有所差異,如南投地區立夏是買大麵回娘家,沿海地區則是在冬至回娘家「補冬」。 Photo: Vermicelli with Pork Leg |

In south-central Taiwan, people eat Hispid Bottle Gourd Noodles in this solar term. Because the weather is getting hotter and hotter, people eat it for reducing the internal heat in the body and increasing strength.
在中南部有立夏吃「匏仔麵」的習俗,「匏仔」就是匏瓜,或稱蒲瓜;因立夏之後,天氣就開始轉熱,民眾因而有吃「匏仔麵」涼補來增加氣力的習俗。
